“This is scar tissue talking. We’ve made every mistake in the book, and I think we got it wrong with some of my kids,” Mr. Anderson said. “We glimpsed into the chasm of addiction, and there were some lost years, which we feel bad about.”

It’s unclear if even a literary and social media supernova like Mr. Green can popularize an unfamiliar new format. But Dutton is cautiously optimistic that the minis will take off during the holiday retail season, and is printing an initial run of 500,000 copies.

“The sad thing about the tech industry is they built everything on subsidized lies: ‘This is going to cost you nothing and you’re going to get amazing things,’” Mr. Scott said. It’s not as easy to imagine a future without Google as it might have been to imagine a future without Zing, or even Yahoo. But it shouldn’t be hard.

But all our hard work, notes Cornell University economist Robert Frank, increasingly ensures nothing of the sort. Frank asks us, as an example, to contemplate the modern wedding, life’s signature happy day. What Americans spend on average for weddings, he points out, has tripled over recent years. “Nobody believes that marrying couples are happier,” observes Frank, “because we spend so much more now.”

Apple has no doubt seen the writing on the wall for a while now. Thanks in large part to the iPhone and photography apps, the photo book just doesn’t carry the cache it once did. It’s honestly a bit surprisingly the whole thing stuck around for as long as it did — though granted, it probably required little in the way of heavy-lifting from the company to keep it around.

Scott Fitzgerald.

Most services use digital equipment such as the HP Indigo or Xerox Versant digital presses. Indigo presses have been around since 2002, while the Canon DreamLabo was launched back in 2012 and is capable of printing the contents of a 20-page A4-size photo album in just 80 seconds. Other equipment may be used, but not for the top-quality services.
