John Sundstrom, the chef and owner of Lark in Seattle, self-published with moderate success. Publishers started calling Sundstrom after he won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northwest in 2007. When the financial crisis hit, the offers disappeared. In 2012, as Kickstarter and the iPad were simultaneously gaining popularity, a friend, Jared Stoneberg, approached Sundstrom, and they decided it was savvier to self-publish the book and also create an app.

But all our hard work, notes Cornell University economist Robert Frank, increasingly ensures nothing of the sort. Frank asks us, as an example, to contemplate the modern wedding, life’s signature happy day. What Americans spend on average for weddings, he points out, has tripled over recent years. “Nobody believes that marrying couples are happier,” observes Frank, “because we spend so much more now.”

A former journalist and author of the 2014 novel "Horrorstör" – which he describes as "a haunted-house story set in an Ikea" – Hendrix once had an online column reviewing forgotten paperbacks for the sci-fi/fantasy house Tor. His editor persuaded him to fashion a book proposal, and Philadelphia-based publisher Quirk commissioned this tongue-in-cheek look at one of the most peculiar phenomena in recent publishing history – the book was released last fall.

“December 13, 1988, is exactly the date that I drove to the printer in Landover, Maryland, and picked up a handful of ‘Banned In DC’ books before they delivered them to my home,” Connolly told WTOP. “I drove through the city and dropped off one book at The Washington Post, late at night.”

Compendium, which is better known in the gift market than in the publishing industry, has landed for the first time on PW’s list of fast-growing publishers after 2017 sales jumped 38% from 2015. Its title output went up 21% in the past three years, with 35 frontlist releases in 2017, up from 29 in 2015. The Seattle-based company specializes in publishing children’s books, gift books, guest books, notebooks, and journals, as well as greeting cards, boxed note cards, stationery, and pop-up cards, although trade books do account for a portion of its overall sales.

Startup Rocket Lab also ramped up its business sending smaller satellites to orbit with its own novel technologies that take advantage of 3D printing and lightweight composite materials.

Mage’s first title in the U.S. was a cookbook, Food of Life: Ancient Persian and Modern Iranian Cooking and Ceremonies, also by Najmieh, now considered the definitive English-language volume on Persian and Iranian cuisine. (PW reviewed the book upon its release in 1986; a 25th-anniversary edition was published in 2011.) The book was a hit, and Mage branched out with children’s books based on Iranian myths, but the titles found no traction in the market.

As Lightning Source has grown and changed, one thing that remains the same is its basic functionality: the ability to print one copy of a book at a time. Asked whether there is such a thing as an average print run, Gallagher observed, “As a print-on-demand printer and distributor, Lightning Source is engineered to print efficiently to a unit of one, so our average print run is actually not much more than that.” But, he added, its new equipment is perfectly able to handle print runs into the thousands.
