The editorial staff at Printing Impressions has compiled the 2018 Printing Impressions 400 list of the largest printing companies in the United States and Canada as ranked by annual sales. The following list marks the 35th consecutive year that we’ve published the Printing Impressions 400 top printer rankings.

The second edition of the book includes some spelling corrections, but editions two through six remained largely unchanged.

I’m still figuring out how we do exhibits here! In addition to expanding its title count, Cottage Door has significantly broadened its distribution reach. Though its initial success was fueled by selling titles in targeted mass merchandisers, its recent growth, Tigges says, “is being driven by a diversity of titles and customers, including e-commerce, independent toy and bookstores, and international markets.” The publisher will continue to expand its reach in 2018 with the launch of a trade line that will feature four titles, including Cottage Door’s first picture book, Nothing Is Scary with Harry, by first-time author Katie McElligott. To accommodate its growth, Cottage Door plans to move to new offices this summer.

"These guys poured in a lot of technique and a lot of emotion into these paintings that they did," he says. "It’s not their fault that they worked for a disposable medium like paperback-book covers."

Look for creative ways to group pictures on a page, varying the sizes of photos to add interest. The use of a full-bleed high-key monochrome image for the background gives the page more impact. (Source: Cahoots.)

Whether it’s for a bridal shower, wedding, graduation or just for yourself, a personalized recipe collection is a gift that keeps on giving.

Looking for new talent, Robbins was at the recent Bologna Children’s Book Fair, where he was selling translation rights and scouting for new international illustrators. “The children’s illustrator market has exploded globally, and our ability to work with these artists regardless of geographic boundary has been a tremendous benefit for Familius, as these artists have very unique and fresh approaches,” Robbins says. “The majority of Familius illustration now comes from international partners.”

Would that this were true. Unfortunately this is incorrect, if idealistic. The significant (far more significant than the actual printing and shipping) costs of producing books in ANY form is built in to the cost of books in either format, so ebooks are certainly not free to produce. They still need to be edited, designed, typeset, marketed, etc.

In the Cologne train station bookstore I found “Mein schönstes Wimmelbuch” (“My Prettiest Wimmelbook”), by Ali Mitgutsch. A German illustrator, he is credited with inventing the form with “Rundherum in meiner Stadt,” or “All Around My Town,” published in 1968. One spread depicts a mountaintop in ski season, whitened by snow and swarming with skiers; another shows the same mountaintop in summer, thick with hikers and picnickers. Another spread features a beach: people laying out, playing ball, digging, urinating under the boardwalk, sunning naked.

The activity in wimmelbooks also has a healthy, comfortable publicness, almost as if people on the pages realize the walls of their houses are transparent — and they don’t mind. Even though we see into houses in some wimmelbooks (because exterior walls have been magically dissolved), we don’t see into people’s heads; by featuring the exteriority of life in its community dimension, the wimmelbooks leave the people private. It’s like depicting a snowstorm through its flurries and drifts, because the point of view of each snowflake is irrelevant.

Doing my tour of the recent Print show in Chicago, my goal was to ferret out what’s new in finishing. Not too far from our stand was the DataBind booth.
