For 15 years, Yuyi Morales has been writing and illustrating magical, award-winning picture books about clever tricksters, monster-fighting niños and heroic historical figures such as Frida Kahlo. In all that time, it never occurred to her to tell her personal story. 

"I never thought my story could be a book for young children because I came to the United States as an adult and a mother," she says on the phone from Xalapa, Mexico, where she has returned to live.

Whether it’s for a bridal shower, wedding, graduation or just for yourself, a personalized recipe collection is a gift that keeps on giving.

Pinkie has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is buried under Gatov’s apple tree with a lot of other loved cats and dogs. But that’s another story. 

While the National Library of Australia has a number of older English cookbooks in its collection, they also own a copy of what is considered Australia’s first cookbook, The English and Australian Cookery Book (1864). The book is attributed to Edward Abbott, a Tasmanian “aristologist” who wrote the book anonymously. (An aristologist is an expert on the subject of eating and cooking.) A publisher and parliamentarian, Abbott was nevertheless an eccentric; he once attacked the Tasmanian premier with an umbrella. The English and Australian Cookery Book was Abbot’s attempt to diversify the colonial Australian diet with local flora and fauna. Recipes include kangaroo brains fried in emu fat and a powerful cocktail called a “Blow My Skull,” which is made of lime, sugar, rum, porter, and brandy.

One of the hottest books right now isn’t a hit because of Oprah Winfrey or Donald Trump. It’s because of a laughing Scottish grandmother.

The book’s unnamed narrator is a daughter of Asian immigrants who is in her late 20s, trying to reconcile how her relationship with her family influences how she views her career, and her willingness to take the next step in a serious relationship.

Whether it’s comb, coil or Wire-O, this type of binding has not been the easiest to automate for higher-volume jobs. And demand remains pretty steady for calendars, journal notebooks, diaries and manuals that comprise the market for this type of binding. First there is the book collation, where there is often a need to insert tabbed section sheets. Then there is the punching of all collated sheets, including the front and back covers. Finally, it’s the insertion of the wire, plastic coil or plastic comb to complete the book or calendar.

There is an elaborate setup for a dog’s birthday party in season seven: "I love entertaining on the beach, so when my friends Joey and Maureen told me it was their dog Theo’s birthday, I thought, what a great excuse for a party!" Which is hilarious, but not only do we never find out who these people are, though it seems they may be stoic East End lesbians, we also barely get a glimpse of Theo, who is racing about the freezing beach. "I’ve invited some friends for trick-or-treat dinner, and Miguel is setting the table!" Ina exclaims by way of introduction in season nine. The same season, there’s the more reasonable: "My friend T.R. has just bought an old fishing shack on the water, and he’s invited me for dinner on the dock." (The house is cute, but don’t worry, he gets a bigger one.)

Despite the digital market’s rapid wax and wane, the industry does not expect e-readers to join MP3 and MiniDisc players in the tech dustbin. The devices, said Tamblyn, were still prized by prolific readers – a group that is predominantly female and over 45, and devours romance and crime novels.
