Baldwin was daunted by the assignment. When he spoke to a group of students in 1979, he described how challenging it was to write a children’s book.

“After selling them all, I was still in the hole, and it wasn’t until the second edition that I got out of the hole,” said Connolly. “Honestly, it was a labor of love, for sure.”
In mid-October, worried that stock would run out just before the holidays, Norton ordered a 10th printing of the book, an additional 10,000 copies. A priority rush order typically takes two weeks, but Norton was told that it would take two months. The new editions arrived at the publishers’ warehouse on Dec. 17, but those copies still needed to get to retailers in time for holiday purchases. Norton just ordered an 11th printing, which will bring the total copies in circulation to 115,000.
Chef Chris Fischer hadn’t thought much about writing a cookbook. He was busy enough managing his grandmother’s 56-year-old, five-acre Beetlebung Farm on Martha’s Vineyard, where he often hosted dinners, as well as working as the chef at the Beach Plum Inn. But after an editor from Little, Brown and Company visited the farm and ate Fischer’s food, she told him she thought he should write a book for her. Some services restrict books to around 20 pages while others can print books with between 200 and 400 pages.
Despite the early popularity of the book, Connolly — like a lot of musicians — didn’t reap many financial benefits with the first edition.
But most importantly, personalization is about trust. It is about building a relationship where customers are happy to share their preferences and opinions, and for brands to use that insight to curate experiences, across the entire customer journey. And that includes post-sale.
Chefs often realize quite early on that the numbers don’t add up in their favor. “It seems like a big chunk of money, but our advance wasn’t even enough to cover the initial expenses,” says Alex Stupak, who co-authored Tacos with Jordana Rothman. “We were already in the red. Fortunately, I have Empellón as income, so I could personally front that money. The check I got seven months after the publication date — after taxes, I think it ended up being $10,000.”
Unit sales of mass market paperbacks fell again in 2017, although the 6.4% decline was smaller than the 7.7% drop recorded the previous year.
