On Sunday, Dec. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Grace Hudson Museum hosts the ninth annual evening of poetry and song celebrating the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Winter Solstice. The Virgin of Guadalupe is often known as Tonantzin, meaning the mother goddess, Mother Earth, and a form of address for the Virgin Mary. Her actual feast day is on December 12 and blends the Old and New Worlds, embodying the Catholic Church and the indigenous peoples of Mexico. Celebrants can participate as readers, as listeners, or as both, and are invited to bring offerings of poetry, stories, dreams, or music — their own or the work of others — in English and/or Spanish.

The catalog, titled “A Holiday of Play,” has QR codes for featured toys. Customers can scan the QR codes to learn more about the toys and place orders. A downloadable PDF version of the toy catalog is available now. In the PDF version, every toy image in the catalog is a clickable link that goes directly to the Amazon page for that product.

It’s unclear if even a literary and social media supernova like Mr. Green can popularize an unfamiliar new format. But Dutton is cautiously optimistic that the minis will take off during the holiday retail season, and is printing an initial run of 500,000 copies.

But even more importantly…eBooks are for more beneficial to the publisher than to the authors. Publisher and author used to split these royalties and with eBooks it is not so. Things have gotten complicated. Ask any author and they will beg you to stick with paper books. They get more royalties from them. There are quite a few articles about the benefit to authors for print books versus eBooks you can find around the interwebs….but basically “the house always wins.”

Sheri Hartkemeyer, owner of Print Express/Brennan Printing, in Independence, said cookbooks account for roughly 50 percent of her business.

Other children’s book creators have taken breaks from writing to get more involved in the electoral process.

Robert Sindelar, the managing partner of Third Place Books in Seattle, said it has been unusually difficult to restock popular titles this year. His store ran out of the Frederick Douglass biography before Thanksgiving. It sold out of “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” about a week ago. It recently got a small shipment of the title, but those were already presold, he said. “We probably could have sold another 100 of that one,” he said.
