A former journalist and author of the 2014 novel "Horrorstör" – which he describes as "a haunted-house story set in an Ikea" – Hendrix once had an online column reviewing forgotten paperbacks for the sci-fi/fantasy house Tor. His editor persuaded him to fashion a book proposal, and Philadelphia-based publisher Quirk commissioned this tongue-in-cheek look at one of the most peculiar phenomena in recent publishing history – the book was released last fall.
When I read this question, I think of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” with the father-son team of Sean Connery and Harrison Ford. In the movie the former has been obsessively searching for the Holy Grail his whole life, and when he and Indiana come upon it–though there are a lot of other tacky, bejeweled options–it turns out the authentic Grail is just a peasant’s wooden cup.
My family reads our wimmelbooks so much, we’re loving them out of their bindings. But they really sank their teemingness into me as I was reading Richard Sennett’s “The Foreigner: Two Essays on Exile,” in which he describes how the political revolutions of 1848 redefined nationalism from one based on monarchies or concocted geographic partitions to one based on ordinary rituals, everyday life and authentic selves.
Shorter books work best with a single theme. It might be a trip of a lifetime, a family get-together or special event like a wedding or special birthday. Publishers are printing smaller first runs, partly because retailers are ordering fewer copies initially, waiting to see which titles take off to avoid making the wrong bet and getting stuck storing unsold inventory. In the past, it was often easy to get another batch of books printed in a week or two if a title sold unexpectedly well, but these days some publishers say it can take one or two months.
“In the macro, business is healthy and there are plenty of books on shelves across America for people to buy,” said Michael Cader, a book industry analyst and the founder of Publishers Marketplace. “But if it’s your book and there’s demand and it’s out of stock, that’s very painful.”

With the too-low-price on the cover, Connolly and colleagues never sold the first edition to distributors, but the initial run of (she believes) 1500 copies were quickly sold locally, and by word of mouth.
