"Before this fall, if you had said ‘Wonky Donkey’ in my store, no one would have known what you were talking about," said Linda Devlin, owner of Linda’s Story Time in Monroe, Connecticut. "Now, it just sells and sells. People see it and say, ‘Oh, I have to get that for my grandchildren.’"

L.A. Campbell, who writes middle grade novels, coordinates a Future Now Fund giving circle called Propeller, which focuses on state political races, with a particular interest in Maine. The nature of children’s literature, she noted, lends itself to the notion of an uphill struggle, so a daunting political cause feels like familiar ground. “The main character of a children’s book is going to have to solve a huge problem, and no one is coming to help. The adults aren’t coming. His best friend isn’t coming,” Ms. Campbell said.

Twitty’s book is a persuasive argument that we all “must know her” to understand ourselves. For while his geographical locus is “The Old South,” this is a story of America and Americans, no matter where they live.

Looking for new talent, Robbins was at the recent Bologna Children’s Book Fair, where he was selling translation rights and scouting for new international illustrators. “The children’s illustrator market has exploded globally, and our ability to work with these artists regardless of geographic boundary has been a tremendous benefit for Familius, as these artists have very unique and fresh approaches,” Robbins says. “The majority of Familius illustration now comes from international partners.”
